Toots are ephemeral, subject to deletion on a whim.

Born at 323 ppm. Living at the crossroads of the Butlerian Jihad and Idiocracy.

I've been terminally online for ~40 years, long before the big endless scroll. I've seen things some people wouldn't believe. 1200 baud modems on fire from Usenet flame wars. I watched c-news servers stutter at the mere mention of Kibo. All those moments will be lost in AI slop, like tears in rain. Time to deshittify.

For whatever reason I just recalled memories of booting RS/6000 systems from tape.

Donโ€™t put all your eggs in one basket, and then swing it over your head. Not like my uncles (who were more like older brothers) taught me to do when I was 7 or 8. Usually worked out, but sometimes not.

I think I've done it. I've finally done it. Reached the end. The end of the internet. Nothing new to scroll. All that appears new is actually old, has already happened at least once before. Time is a flat circle. Things are repeating, but not.

The more you try to make a service highly available and resilient to outages, the more complex it becomes to manage it all. Eventually there is always some random bit that isnโ€™t working quite right and you spend so much time on it all.

This is a reason why I donโ€™t run public access instances. Another is more people than you might expect being shit heads and the time / energy needed for moderating of their activities.

Iโ€™m perfectly fine with two nines of uptime on my private instance in the corner of my office at home.

Seeing news articles weekly, if not more frequently, about various states, cities, and businesses begging Canadians to please come to the USA and spend money.

Yeah, no.

Get bent.

Remember back in the 80s where you had dust covers for computers, including keyboards and screens, because they got turned off for a good portion of the time (like when sleeping, at school/work, etc?

Also, no eating at the computer desk.

Well. I have peanut butter on my laptop. I may or may not have straight up licked my trackpad and keyboard.

Two weeks ago we were travelling LHR -> YYC

The extra $$ for premium economy for a long flight is well worth it. Extra leg and shoulder room.

How many run time hours do you have on your drives? My desktop's direct attached thunderbolt array has about 72K hours (8+ years) under its belt. I run a scrub every 6 months or so and haven't found any bad blocks yet. It's also backed up on a regular schedule.

Importing ~500 GB of raw vacation photos sure did take a while. Hours. Capture one wanted to do a bunch of processing to generate previews and such during import. Now backing them up in triplicate with my usual flow before starting work on tagging and ranking.

Airport security theatre today decided my tiny beard scissors with 1/4 inch or shorter blades with super obvious blunt tips tips were not ok to take on a plane.

Even after I stabbed my palm quite hard without breaking the skin.

Canโ€™t even open wide enough to cut anything more than a baby finger maybe.

Then there was the language barrier of course with what they wanted me to do. Eventually threw them out but I think they wanted me to check them as non cabin baggage somehow.

On an Egypt trip with a small tour group organized by a fellow Canadian. Sheโ€™s a little frazzled and the language issues twixt her and our local guide gives extreme Fawlty Towers vibes (Basil vs Manuel). Extra entertainment for me.

Deleted my Amazon.com a while back, other than ghost AWS zero bill issue. Deleted my amazon.ca account just now.

About a year ago, after not having used AWS for many years previous, I started receiving monthly invoice notices for $0.00

I can not find how to turn this off or delete my account anywhere in their dogs breakfast of account services web pages and similar useless help pages.

A+ shitty empire you have there, Bozo Bezos.

In the early 90s I worked with Data General Dasher D2 serial terminals that are the inspiration for the computers in Severance. The D2 was in the printer room and was used to control the print queues. The keyboards were shit, partly because even at that time those terminals were long in the tooth (introduced 1977), and the keyboards were starting to go.

My favourite as far as looks went was the D200, from 1979. I was also able to type reasonably ok on it and used an in house Oracle Pro*C Forms application in my main job as well as monkeying around with rewriting printer queue management scripts for the new AViiON DG/UX system that replaced a pair of MV/8000 AOS beasts.

This is my happy place.

Testing out my new camera. Worlds better low light ISO performance than my 2014 era previous camera. Which I need to now gather up accessories and boxes and put up for sale to defray some of the cost of the new-to-me one. (I did save a little bit by getting a 10/10 mint graded used one from a major online photography store.)

Ham-handed post-processed quickly in C1 and Nik Silver Efex to see what it looked like in black and white.
