I've been terminally online for ~40 years, long before the big endless scroll. I've seen things some people wouldn't believe. 1200 baud modems on fire from Usenet flame wars. I watched c-news servers stutter at the mere mention of Kibo. All those moments will be lost in AI slop, like tears in rain. Time to deshittify.

So, for reasons, I am still using discord on a fairly frequent basis. Why does it need to install updates nearly every day upon starting it up? Same goes for Firefox and Chrome.

Let's go back to having stable releases with security fixes only. Feature updates or whatever can wait for quarterly updates.

Unless of course, those daily updates are mostly security updates, in which case burn it all down and start over.

Looking for a simple self hosted chat system for non technical end users.

We got everyone off FB messaging to sms but the android peeps have old devices which I think is part of why they see blurry low res images sent from iPhones. Or Apple botched RCS implementation.

I have a Synology nas and have tried syno chat (clunky) and rocket chat via docker (too many bells and whistles and overly complex onboarding of end users)

Suggestions?

Anything that can spin up in a docker instance, I will try.

I think I'll keep the 1945 Parker Vacumatic in Emerald Pearl inked up, despite it being the quickest to dry out and not the best writer either. I just think it looks neat.

Not sure why I had five fountain pens inked up and sat on my desk for months. They of course all dried up. Some of them even evaporated most of the ink that was in their converter unit. A bit of water on the nib and feed got them temporarily working again.

I should clean them out soon and just keep one inked at a time. Maybe also not ignore it for months.

I love when a company emails me changes to their privacy policy or that they now offer a unified login across their various properties they have bought up. Gives me the opportunity to ask them to delete my account and all of the related data.

To be honest, most times I had completely forgotten about said company.

Went for a haircut today, long overdue. Tried a new barber shop, cash only place (though e-transfers work). Best barber I’ve had in a while, will keep them. Usually get a buzz but went down to the wood today for the first time. My poor widdle head is cold now.

At the start of the pandemic, I had been already working from home for about six years and was very comfortable with the video meetings.

The majority of the company was new to it though, and they were doing video calls for the first time due to offices temporarily closed for the plague. When I attended some meeting outside of my usual group it was a revelation for many that you could have fun with it.

Most didn't know about having custom backgrounds, for instance.
Screen shot of me video conferencing with my face largely obscured by the hood of my bath robe, and the background from 'this is fine' comic with the house on fire etc. This screen shot was shared in company chat with others that hadn't been in that meeting, with the person sharing saying "This is how you do video conferencing." (12 ha ha reactions)
