I watched c-news servers stutter at the mere mention of Kibo. All those moments will be lost in AI slop, like tears in rain. Time to deshittify.
@ghorwood As one does. I'm heading to the local greenhouse this coming weekend to get their big pots of tomato plants with fruit already on them, for half off. Couldn't be arsed to start from seed again, having done that some years back. I don't do anything with them other than make sandwiches so that works for me.
Remember back in the 80s where you had dust covers for computers, including keyboards and screens, because they got turned off for a good portion of the time (like when sleeping, at school/work, etc?
Also, no eating at the computer desk.

@cks Mine are spinning rust. Home use just isn't very stressful compared to servers that get hammered with databases and hundreds of virtual machines general io. I remember having cold spares sitting right in the colocation cages ready to pop in asap so the arrays would have time to recover by the time the vendor got around to bringing a replacement. Most weeks, even months, nothing failed. Other times we'd have a week where they were getting eaten like candy.
How many run time hours do you have on your drives? My desktop's direct attached thunderbolt array has about 72K hours (8+ years) under its belt. I run a scrub every 6 months or so and haven't found any bad blocks yet. It's also backed up on a regular schedule. #sysadmin
Importing ~500 GB of raw vacation photos sure did take a while. Hours. Capture one wanted to do a bunch of processing to generate previews and such during import. Now backing them up in triplicate with my usual flow before starting work on tagging and ranking.
Airport security theatre today decided my tiny beard scissors with 1/4 or shorter blades with super obvious blunt tips tips were not ok to take on a plane.

Then there was the language barrier of course with what they wanted me to do. Eventually threw them out but I think they wanted me to check them as non cabin baggage somehow.
On an Egypt trip with a small tour group organized by a fellow Canadian. She’s a little frazzled and the language issues twixt her and our local guide gives extreme Fawlty Towers vibes (Basil vs Manuel). Extra entertainment for me.
