I've been terminally online for ~40 years, long before the big endless scroll. I've seen things some people wouldn't believe. 1200 baud modems on fire from Usenet flame wars. I watched c-news servers stutter at the mere mention of Kibo. All those moments will be lost in AI slop, like tears in rain. Time to deshittify.
I haven't looked at u toob in a while for anything beyond some street photography interviews and omg is there ever a lot of ai generated garbage. I thought the fake happy-go-lucky influencers were bad before but this just takes the cake. Blargh.
Photos or it didn't happen. It's very very very slow to boot, I'm not holding out much hope it will complete. Best I plan on extracting the hard disk data to an image tomorrow and see what I can do with that.
I thought the loud noises from this little server were from the power supply fan, chassis fan, or maybe the hard disk. Nope, it's the cpu cooler. Sounds a bit like a two stroke chain saw.
Shuffled ram around, no joy. There are a bunch of caps nearby that look like they're leaking a bit. Hmm. Diagnostics sometimes pass, sometimes not.
Maybe I'll just pop the ide drive out and find my ide-to-usb thing, copy to an image and see if a vm can deal with the zfs inside that. Might have to install a Solaris x86 vm.
I haven't worked with solaris or physical sun hardware in a looooong time, but I do have Solaris 10 optical media for sparc and intel here somewhere, and I know I used it to create a vm in the past.
Trying to boot up a Sun V100 that’s sat disconnected in the basement since we moved 12 years ago.
First I had to find where packrat me stored the sun rj45 to db9 console dongles, and then the old ibm 3151 terminal and its null modem cable and some gender benders and… I can see the LOM. (lights out management)
No go for boot. Diags say bad dimm0. I think there’s more than one dimm though, as it shows 1500 mb total.
So, for reasons, I am still using discord on a fairly frequent basis. Why does it need to install updates nearly every day upon starting it up? Same goes for Firefox and Chrome.
Let's go back to having stable releases with security fixes only. Feature updates or whatever can wait for quarterly updates.
Unless of course, those daily updates are mostly security updates, in which case burn it all down and start over.
Looking for a simple self hosted chat system for non technical end users.
We got everyone off FB messaging to sms but the android peeps have old devices which I think is part of why they see blurry low res images sent from iPhones. Or Apple botched RCS implementation.
I have a Synology nas and have tried syno chat (clunky) and rocket chat via docker (too many bells and whistles and overly complex onboarding of end users)
Suggestions?
Anything that can spin up in a docker instance, I will try.
At the start of the pandemic, I had been already working from home for about six years and was very comfortable with the video meetings.
The majority of the company was new to it though, and they were doing video calls for the first time due to offices temporarily closed for the plague. When I attended some meeting outside of my usual group it was a revelation for many that you could have fun with it.
Most didn't know about having custom backgrounds, for instance.
So much vibe coding going on in the maker circles I am following online. Very off-putting. I mean, it gets them going in the direction they think they want to go, but at what cost?
They don't understand what they've (partially) built and are asking for help. Umm, no help from me. No thanks, that is some thin ice on top of the liquid manure pit you're skating on there.
