Early in my career, a more senior colleague gave me a bit of advice. "You act like you are expecting the cavalry to ride over the hill and rescue everything," he said. "There is no cavalry. Nobody is coming. The only people who will rescue us is us."

I think about that a lot

I got a related bit of advice as a teenage Air Force brat from a grown-up in the service. "If you look around and can't tell who's in charge," he said, "that means YOU’RE in charge – at least until someone with actual authority shows up and relieves you."

@jalefkowit My dad gave me a very similar piece of advice which I use regularly.

Look to the left of you.
Look to the right of you.
Is there anybody else in charge?
No?
Then you are.
