@scuttlebutt Vintage fall 2016 iPhone 7+ for me, so it's just over nine years old (I got it at release, more or less). I theoretically plan to replace it basically now, since it's stuck on iOS 15, but I keep not getting around to it, party because the whole replacement will be a giant pain.

(I like the fingerprint sensor more than I expect to like face unlock, for example.)

@cks You're already looking at the screen when unlocking though, unless you do blind unlocks with it in your pocket for some sneaky recording reason.

@scuttlebutt My face is pretty variable in common usage. Mask vs no mask, multiple (sun)glasses variations (and sometimes no glasses), bicycle helmet versus no bicycle helmet. I suspect I'll have a lot of uncertainty. Fingerprint unlock is almost 100% predictable without being so broad that, for example, someone with my broad face shape in dark sunglasses plus a mask can unlock it. (Because some of the time I will be unlocking in that situation.)

@scuttlebutt The other thing about fingerprint vs face unlock is that, as I was reminded today, I spend a certain amount of time carrying my phone around face-up and looking at it with it deliberately not unlocked. Fingerprint unlock is very hard to accidentally trigger (and then accidentally wind up touch-interacting with stuff on the screen). I suspect face unlock is more trigger happy, but maybe I'm wrong.

@cks You can do that (locked, looking at whatever is on the screen) without it auto unlocking by face. I have to swipe up from the bottom to have the Face ID do its thing. Swipe one way for camera while still locked, or swipe the other way for a dashboard thing.

@cks Swipe to camera does NOT enable people to go from camera app to looking at your photos, unless you are looking at the camera right when doing the swipe to camera screen.

@scuttlebutt Used to upgrade every two years but switched to three years. Currently have a Pixel 9 Pro, which replaced a Pixel 6 a little over a year ago (was happy they decided to make Pros that are not too big).

Curious about Bryan (
@resplendent606) running GrapheneOS on a Pixel 6, since I still have that and might like to experiment...

@scuttlebutt mine's from 2017. I've taken it to the repair shop quite a few times and replaced the glass made-to-break back cover with a plastic one myself.

Feels good to keep it running for so long.

@scuttlebutt thinking back over the mobile phone era, I think I had 7 phones in total over 25 years. Two were unscheduled replacements as one got stolen and one broke unexpectedly. The current one is going on 6 years and I'm dreading having to replace it one day.

Bought my original cell phone - (NOT a smart phone) - for $10 in 2007. Tracfone with minutes purchased as needed. When 2g stopped working, they sent me a new 3g dumbphone free. When 3g stopped working (Jan 2022), they sent a 4g dumbphone free. Both times, they tried to talk me into paying to "upgrade" to a smartphone instead, but I said nope, just the free replacement for my old phone is fine. So if you don't count the forced replacements, I'm using the same $10 phone I bought in 2007.

@CommonSparrow @scuttlebutt I do remember back many years ago when I got an extender for 3G (probably not the right term--a device that has a small radius 3G signal and plugged into your home Internet) I had to buy a new phone because my own phone was a dumb 2G one. I had asked the vendor about that but they said, "ha no one still has a 2G only phone."

@scuttlebutt Nokia 1200. Manufactured 2007. Has GSM, so works on 2G networks - which has still good support in Germany.
It is very handy, fits in every pocket, and one hand is enough to fully operate it conveniently. Has killer apps like SMS, flashlight, a game (Snake), Clock, Calendar with reminder. Nice melodies. Battery swapping in 2 seconds. Standby 14 days, with moderate usage 7 days.
