Back in the day, William Goldman -- yes, that William Goldman, the novelist who wrote The Princess Bride, the screenwriter who wrote "Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid", and "The Stepford Wives" -- poo-pooed auteur theory.

I
got it. I did, truly. Filmmaking is ever and always a group enterprise, a complex collaborative dance.

But ya know, I
begrudged the learning.

It's a pretty good show, but let's set that aside for a minute.

The
cinematography achievement is astonishing. The acting achievement is impressive. The continuity achievement is over the top. The hair/makeup/costume achievement is insane.

Every episode, I think of the
dozens and dozens of artists who made it happen.

Breathtaking.
