Back in the day, William Goldman -- yes, that William Goldman, the novelist who wrote The Princess Bride, the screenwriter who wrote "Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid", and "The Stepford Wives" -- poo-pooed auteur theory.
I got it. I did, truly. Filmmaking is ever and always a group enterprise, a complex collaborative dance.
But ya know, I begrudged the learning.
It's a pretty good show, but let's set that aside for a minute.
The cinematography achievement is astonishing. The acting achievement is impressive. The continuity achievement is over the top. The hair/makeup/costume achievement is insane.
Every episode, I think of the dozens and dozens of artists who made it happen.
Breathtaking.
